Level,rough rake top soil or lay in 2" of dark dirt. Make sure there are no depressions to hold water as poor drainage kills roots. 16 to26 Celsius is the best temp range for root development. Water well after laying then press flat to remove air gaps.

Use a rototiller to break up all the soil. You probably want to break up the soil to a depth of 6 inches or so. This will help the sod take root. Other than that, maybe add some new soil.

The same way that i did when my wife asked me to get some turf down in the back garden. I said "sod off" so she did with the milkman.
