Yankeedude is way off
In 1961 the Yankees won the world series and roger maris broke the homerun record
In 1962 the Mets came into existence and were the worst team ever --- THey won 40 games and lost 120 ... and THEY OUTDREW THE YANKEES!!!
In fact the Mets never were over .500 until 1969 and they consistently outdrew the yankees until the mid 70s ... once the Mets traded tom seaver their attendance dipped ... and the Yankees controlled NY from 76-83 .... then the mets got good and controlled it in the late 80s ... and its been yankees ever since except now it is evening out
The yankees have a more national and international appeal so they have more fans overall ... in new york it is close ..... this year they will both draw close to 4 million
NY has always been a NL town ... there were 2 nl and 1 al team for years ... if the Mets win they will become toast of the town once again

As a lifelong Met fan who has lived his whole life all over New York City and in several different suburbs, I would have to say . . . the Yankees. Met fans are great and they're passionate, but most honest Met fans would admit that the Yankees are just in a different stratosphere.
Same with the Giants over the Jets, the Knicks over the Nets and the Rangers over the Islanders and Devils. It doesn't really matter who's hot at the moment (though it helps), but the old established, traditional teams in New York are treated like royalty, and, quite fankly, they've earned it.
That being said, I love being a Mets fan in New York.

Maybe locally you see that there's more Mets fans, but the Yankees fan base is a world wide fan base. You have a whole generation of kids now, raised in a time when the Yankees were the dominant force, creating an even broader fan base.

I've been a Mets fan for over 20 years, and I can say without a doubt there are way more Yankees fans in this world.

The Yankees fans outnumber the Mets fans by a long ways. If you look around the whole country, I don't think the Mets have as many fans as the Cubs, either. There are a lot of fans of those lovable losers from the windy city.

Check the attendance since 1962 when the Mets joined major league baseball. You will find that the Yankee fans overwhelming out number the Mets fans. People just love to watch the Yankees play.

I saw a story on the biggest road followings in baseball and largest amount of purchased products nationwide for those teams. Yankees where #1, Cubs #2, Red Sox and Dodgers really close for 3 & 4....

Not even close, the Yankees. Look who brings the fans out to the stadiums.
