I can't believe that you don't know how to uses a remote.
Is this a special remote that need adjustment? If not just point to the IR receiver in the unit and press the button.
If yes you need to mention what type is it, and yes the other guy is correct for this one you need to read the manual.

Aim the remote across the tv and push the buttons.

Is it multifunction remote? if it is in deed, you have to check the brand of the cd, tv, etc. then look at the list provided and enter the code.

I would suggest googling TiVo remote. There should be some ways to help you.
Or look in your manuel.
