And I quote...

"Carpet cleanings should be limited to spot cleanings for the extended life of your flooring. If the occasion arises where a professional cleaning is neccessary contact one that does steam cleaning with only a truck mounted system. Other companies use excessive water and do not extract even a 1/3 of the water used, therefore the life of your carpet is null in void and stains will re-appear more quickly. Home carpet cleaners are even worse, and with those you have no one to blame but yourself. Do yourself a favor and call in a professional once or twice a year and it'll protect your investment."

The fact that you do this every month tells me that you should use a wee bit LESS detergent than normal (more water), just to be safe. Make sure you get as much of the solution vacuumed out as you go along. The moisture left in the carpet will eventualy break down the backing that the carpet is woven into. By getting it as dry as possible with the machine, you will reduce the chance of pre-mature rotting or deterioration of the backing. The steam cleaner is probably easier on the carpet than a vacuum with a beater bar head on it.

I know the feeling - there is just something nice about knowing your carpet is clean. I asked the same question - last time I had the carpet done. Although, the process is not harmful to the carpet - it can (over time) - cause damage the carpet's natural stain resisting properties. So basically, the more you have your carpet cleaned - the more likely it is to get dirty.
The one solution that was mentioned is having scotch guard applied (at an additional charge of course). I went ahead and had it done - seems to work - and my carpet still looks new (despite having an indoor golden retriever).
