I am assuming you have self-published, since if you were published via a traditional publisher, the publisher would be handling this.
First, you need to send out review copies to reviewers willing to review self-published or POD titles. You can find a link on my website that has a list of dozens of reviewers willing to review POD. Reviews (even bad ones) are one of the most important parts of promotion. Most online review sites also include links to your book, so if someone likes the book they can purchase it immediately.
Next, you need to identify your target market. Find websites that deal in your topic and see if they offer advertising options. I have had great success with book giveaways. Many sites do contests that give away books and such when folks sign up for newsletters. Normally, you can get front page exposure just by offering a few copies of your book.
Contact conventions (either generic book conventions or genre specific ones) and purchase advertising in their programs or offer free copies as door prizes.

I'm going to assume that this is self-published, because you're promoting it yourself, so that is how I'm going to direct my answers.
If you've self-published, it is probably because you have a niche book - something that you care deeply about that isn't necessarily considered "marketable" by the big publishers. But that's okay! Since it is your niche, you know it better than them, anyway! Work that angle - promote from within.
Depending on what the book is about or what genre it is (if fiction), there are all sorts of places you could promote it. Any local, independent booksellers in your area should have a section for local authors, and you can probably give a reading at their store. I suggest local independents because I've seen some signings at the bigger chain stores for relatively unknown authors, and they just set up a table for them and do little promotion - very sad, you'd think they'd want to say "we discovered him!" or something.
Are there any conferences you frequently attend that relate to your book? For example, if you wrote about, say, woodworking, is there an annual woodworking show you go to where you could set up a booth or tent or table and sell your book?
Check out craftshow schedules - a lot of them will also include authors who are self-publishing and promoting their own works. (hey, if they let people sell painted soda bottles as bird feeders, they should be supportive of someone selling an actual BOOK!). You could probably even team up with another local author and split the cost of the booth.
Get the word out online! Make a webpage about your book, look into how Yahoo! Search and Google and other search engines work and make sure your page is friendly to search engines so people can find your book. Start a blog there, too, and talk about how you wrote the book and anything else interesting.
Just please, please don't promote it on this site (Y! Answers) as "Something I just read" or "A friend recommended it" without saying it is your work... that's just wrong on so many levels, not to mention against the guidelines.
Congratulations on having a book out there! That's very exciting.

Well i haven't technically ever published a book before but here's what i would do.....
Start small. Try contacting the local newspaper to see if they can do a book review.
The Internet is a great, cost-effective way of getting your book across. Perhaps you could create a website with snippets from your book and display the link to it in chat rooms.etc.
Inform your friends about your book, word gets around.
If your book does manage to make it big then there are always bigger marketing technique's like talk shows and book signings in major book stores.......but that comes later.
If its a good book it will speak for itself........So don't worry too much and never let your spirits down. Best of luck!!!
