Country Roads
Written and originally performed by John Denver
Hit # 2 on the Top 40 charts in 1972
This was Denver's first major hit record

Almost heaven, West Virginia
Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River,
Life is old there, older than the trees
Younger than the mountains, growin' like a breeze.

Country roads, take me home, to the place, I belong
West Virginia , mountain momma
Take me home, country roads

All my memories, gather round her
Miner's lady, stranger to blue water
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky
Misty taste of moonshine
Teardrop in my eye.

Country roads, take me home, to the place, I belong
West Virginia , mountain momma
Take me home, country roads

I hear the voice in the morning hours she calls me
The radio reminds me of my home far away
And drivin' down the road
I get a feelin' that I should have been home yesterday Yesterday....

Take me home, country roads, to the place, I belong
West Virginia , mountain momma
Take me home, country roads
Take me home, country roads

Johnn Denver

"Take Me Home, Country Roads" is a song written by Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert, and initially recorded by singer John Denver. It was included on his 1971 breakout album Poems, Prayers and Promises; the single went to #2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

The beginning of the song sets the scene of the area of which Denver sings:

Almost heaven, West Virginia
Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River...
The song has been embraced by West Virginia as a de facto state anthem, although it has no official status as a state song. It sees especially wide use at West Virginia University, as it is played at virtually all athletic events and many university functions. A particularly notable use is after WVU football wins at home, when the fans are encouraged to stay in the stands and sing the song along with the football team.

The song was used in the American Dad episode "American Dream Factory".

The song was also used in the Prison Break episode "First Down".

Looks like John Denver, but I love it with Rod Stewart.

Umh!, Made a big mistake. Rod Stewart does not sing Country Roads but Country Comforts... (Bernie Taupin, Elton John)...

Soon the pines will be falling everywhere
Village children always fighting for fair share
And the six-o-nine goes roarin' down the creek
As Parson Lee prepares his service for next week

I saw grandma yesterday down at the store
Well she's really lookin' fine for eighty-four
And she asked me if some time I'd fix the barn
Poor old girl, she needs a man down on the farm

Chorus:
And it's good old country comforts in my bones
Just the sweetest sound my ears have ever known
Just an old fashioned feeling in my bones
Country comforts and the road that's going home

Down at the mill they've got a new machine
Foreman says it cuts manpower by fifteen
"Oh, but that ain't natural" old man Grayson says
'cause he's a horse-drawn man until his dying days

The original singer was John Denver who wrote the song but it wasn't a hit for him in the UK.
Olivia Newton-John had a hit with it in 1973.
