First of all...I love the name. Go Steelers. Secondly the answer to your question is no. He is an above average DB but since the 49ers I have to spend some cash, they overpaid. Chances are he will be cut after 4 or 5 years go by on his contract.

Absolutely. But you have to know some recent 49er history to know why. They have had the absolute worst time trying to find a solid corner back. They spent like 3 first-round draft picks on DBs, because they couldnt afford to sign a big name corner ( because of salary cap troubles). But they were all disappointing. The 49ers defense has struggled over the past few years specifically because of their TERRIBLE secondary. Its been FRUSTRATING to say the least.
Granted 80 mil a lot of money, but for the first time in a long time, the 49ers have the money...and then some. They still have enough to sign 2 or 3 more impact players this offseason. They cant afford not to sign Clements.
Additionally, if they are going to be a playoff contender they have to beat the Cardinals who have Larry Fitzgerald, the Seahawks who have Deion Branch, and the Rams who have Torry Holt. Clements is an $80 Mil gift from god.
And while maybe he isnt THE BEST corner in the league (though definitely in the top 5), he is absolutely the MOST NEEDED. So if you look at it this way (a top 5 corner for the team who needs one the most) i think the answer is yes, he is worth it.
Its easy to say "No he isnt worth it!" But, you really have to put yourself in the 49ers' shoes to know just how much he is "worth."

no Clements isnt worth 80 million. He will never see all 80 of it either. He will be cut 2 maybe 3 years into the contract. 4 at the most. Clements isnt even in the top 5, maybe even 10 in terms of CB in the league. He just happened to be the best free agent CB this year.

Nate Clements got a lot of his stats playing across from Terrence McGee, and he's not worth $80M by his bad self. No way.
