$ 50 a day is a lot !!!! You will probably live for much cheaper than that.
I spent 4 months in India and always paid between $ 2 and $ 10 for really ok hotel rooms. Food costs you about $2 - $ 4 a meal. The only place where you have to calculate more money is if you go to Goa.
Most expensive thing on my trip was the travelling part. So depending on how often you'll change location, calculate more money. Although it's not really expensive either (eg. I paid $ 20 for a train from Delhi to Mumbai).
I spent $ 1000 a month, but only because I couldn't resist shopping and sending packages home by mail.

If of course you spend most of your time in touristy places doing stuff like renting a jet ski you need plenty of money (but if you wanted to do that you'd probably go somewhere else on vacation anyways).

6 months WOW, well firstly it all depends on how extravagant you want it. India, you can live on as little as 2 bucks or less a day tp 2000$ a day. if you live in cheap hotels then expect them to be cheap (the days in will seem like Buckingham Palace) cheap means **** there. Food can be very cheap at roadside places called "DHABBAS" but if you dont have good imunity you will wish you had a nice bathroom to go to!! If you are really adventourous you will love it. also travel in the months between nov to feb. its too hot in summer (worse than arizona, and dont expect airconditioning at cheap hotels.

be ready to haggle on the price of everything. if you are white american, you'll be taken for a ride everystep of the way. its better to make some friends and let them do the bargaining for you.

trains are dirty, overcrowded, filthy and dangerous, but its an experience. dont travel with cash, you will be seperated from it very fast.

planes are ok.
\take an ample supply of the following

peptobismol
anti diarrhials
motrin
zithromax
water purification tablets or drink evian there (may have been refilled at the Indian sourse though)
deodorant

so all in all lets say you want some comforts and safety, you are talking at least 50 bucks a day. so times 30 times 6 is 9000$. Now you could stay with families and save on costs that way. just make some friends here and ask them if they have family in India. Indians are very hospitable and to have someone stay with them for a month for free is not unusuall. I am from there as you prob can tell already....good luck

the first question is "Why?!"

Given the money corporations say they save by outsourcing US jobs to India, you ought to be able to stay for 6 months in India for about seventeen dollars and forty cents.
