Just find the main water shut-off in your house and turn it off...it's easy and there's nothing to it!

There should be shut-off valve(s) located at the water meter. The main shut-off is usually at the property line so the water company does not need to enter your home for discontinuing service. Many service providers will shut it off free and turn it back on when you request it. If you have a meter-box (out in the yard) there is a valve with a raised "bar" on top. The bars direction tells you if the water is on or off. Across the pipe is off, with the pipe is on. You can turn this valve with a cresent wrench or channel-locks.

I agree with the first answer, but make sure that before you unhook any pipes that you turn on the faucet first and let the water drain out of the pipes. Otherwise you will end up with a pool of water on the floor. If you can't find the main water shut off, it is usually in the basement or a small utility room. Check near your water heater.
