Before Schindler's List took home the gold in 1994 The Apartment (1960), directed by Billy Wilder and starring Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacClaine (her film debut) and Fred McMurray. This, incidentally is cited by filmmaker Cameron Crowe (Jerry Maguire) as his favorite film of all time. In fact, he tried to persuade Billy Wilder to take his first acting part as Tom Cruise's mentor, Dicky Fox in his latest film. The Apartment also won Oscars for Best Director, Screenplay (Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond), Editing (Daniel Mandell), Art Direction-Set Decoration, (Alexander Trauner, Edward G. Boyle). It was later made into a Broadway musical, Promises, Promises.
Also Good night and Good luck was the last B&W film to be nominated for an Oscar. I believe.
