I have had my own business and I have been employed - the main difference is security. If you are a risk taker ( and perhaps don't have a family depending on your income ), you may want to consider working for yourself. However, children are expensive and working for someone usually has some kind of insurance for families. Private insurance is expensive....

Wow! The easy answer is self-employment. But I did that and know that the answer is found in what is best for the individual at the time.

Having my own business was great and I can truly say that I pretty much got what I put into it. It wasn't a formulated thing like the network marketing stuff (avon, amway, 5linx, etc). I took what I knew and offered it as a consultant. It was great in many ways.

The flip side was having to playg every part of the business every day. I had to balance doing the work with finding the work, and at the end of the day there was no end of the day. I had to work to remain known, appreciated, and referred by my clients - Sunday through Saturday. I enjoyed working for myself, but I like having vacations and benefits and assistants and people to work with. I like doing my own thing, but I like working 5 days a week, too,.

I know many people will tell you the benefits of being self-employed. Believe me there are a lot of benefits! But do consider the downside, too. One has to sustain one's self while building the business, and once must do what it takes to keep the business going... no coasting days! Maybe when my kids are grown I will go that route again... right now, I just want a profession where I am respected, compensated for my time and effort, and can put it down at the end of the day.

well my husband recently got a self employed job about a year ago and its been pretty good the only thing is that being self employed you do work alot of hours and if you have a family it might cause some problems depending on how strong your relationship is, because you spend so much time at work you do get tired and your family does need attention just as long as you are there for your family and spend the time off with them.
