Sometimes when I turn the key over it just makes a winding sound. So I have to let off and turn it again and it will finally turn the engine over and start. Anybody know?

The starter's solenoid and associated mechanical parts are not making the starter drive engage the ring gear teeth on the flywheel. This may be somethign as simple as a weak Bendix drive spring. The starter has to be removed and tested on the bench to isolate the problem.

A 'winding' from your starter may indicate a bad starter drive which is also called a bendix. Its a common problem on GM starters for the drives to wear out and not stay engaged when they mesh with the gear teeth on the flywheel. This kind of thing can be an intermittent problem that comes and goes, but eventually will leave you stranded. It depends on the type of starter on your vehicle but it may be less expensive to install a high quality rebuilt starter than buy parts and have the old starter repaired.

Normally when you have starter problems, it will click without engaging to start. Sometimes winding noise without engaging too. This is a sign that the starter is on its last leg. Usually you can hit the body of the starter, if accessible, and it will enagage and start the vehicle. But eventually its will die and nor more clicking or anything else will work rather than replacing it.

When your starter goes out, it will make a buzz or winding sound like you said, and won't turn over at all. Look at your bolts that fasten it and make sure they are tight. My camaro did that to me. Freaked me out, but resolved it.

if its going whizzzzzzzz than your most likely "double starting" which means your clicked it a little bit to far than your trying to start it again.

or its the solenoid going out / being over heated.

could be missing teeth on the gears in your starter, or if its a much older vehicle, could be missing teeth on the flywheel.

Well, if you find a note taped to your open hood that reads, "see you in the morning", that would be a good indication.
