when my teacher belly dances the expressions on her face are a part of it. i have been taking lessons off and on for about 2 years and when i smile it looks forced. my teacher looks so into it and sometimes with some moves kind of seductive. i want to preform but I need to work on my facial expressions. anyone else ever have this problem and have any advice?

i am not a dancer but a musician, but i think i know how to do it.

It comes from enjoying the movements of your body and the attention of the people - a kind of love and sensuality.

What you need to do to learn it is to dance with honesty - dance how you feel. Dance sad, dance angry, dance ugly, and then eventually you will find the grace that comes naturally to you. Not something you are copying and trying to put on, but what comes from inside.

Your 'facial expressions' look 'forced' because you are 'thinking about them' and not 'just looking natural' ... so I think that the 'best way' for you to get the 'right expression' is to 'totally immerse yourself in the music and the dance' and eventually your 'facial expressions' will look quite 'natural' and even 'seductive' ... try dancing for an hour daily when you are 'totally alone' and can 'dance totally naked' and 'just get into it' with your 'whole body' ... I know that this 'advice' is 'counter-intuitive' because I'm telling you to 'ignore' the part of your 'dance' that is 'bothering you most' ... but it will WORK if you truly give it a chance ... and that is a 'psychological truth' by the way, in whatever it is that you are 'doing' and are having 'trouble with' ...

This is easy to resolve watch a movie called The last sameraii and the whole answer will be explained when a character tells the lead character ...".Too many minds". Forget what you look like . Leave the mirror behind. Go to a swimming pool and do your routine in the water with your eyes shut. I guarantee if you do you will feel so at ease the facial expression will be there when you need it. feel the music feel the giggle welling up in your center and say this is so much fun I am going to shimmer like a rainbow in water

Most people who dance or perform learn how to let their eyes go to "soft focus". You can sort of see people and shapes but you let the details go out of focus. You then let the people disappear completely and imagine that you are with your lover and only that person can see your real face and they have just told you that you are the most gorgeous creature on the face of the Earth.

Try it!

I asked a fellow belly dancer the same thing-why she always looked so hot, and i looked so strained and concentrated. she said, 'Just think, everyone is looking at you, and wishing they could move like you. They're impressed, and the guys think you're hot dancing. That makes me smile every time."

There is no mistery to your problem, just feel the music, show them what you can do. You have to dance with your body and your soul. Then, let the magic flow out.
