Today is my first day babysitting a 1 yr old (I have 2 & 5 yr olds of my own) He has been crying for his mother for over 2 hours (close to 3). He refuses his bottle and food. I have tried rocking, singing, dancing, cartoon, toys, going outside, a bath, soothing music, swinging.......pretty much anything I can think of......anyone else have any ideas?

I feel for you. Two hours is a lot of crying for a little one, and hard to listen to too! Kudos for your patience and for trying all you know. My daughter had terrible separation anxiety when I left her at first Do you have a contact number for his mother? Maybe she could give some tips on things they do together. Or how she calms him down.

I am sure that your kids have tried to entertain this little guy too, by dancing and singing in front of him. Have you tried putting him down on the floor with some toys and start the vaccum. That always calmed down my nephew. Maybe a stroller ride to the park?

Best of luck to you, and I hope that you find something that will soothe him!

He has separation anxiety. He will just have to get used to you and eventually he will stop the crying. My kids did this for two weeks straight when I put them in daycare for the first time at 10 months old. The daycare used to call me and tell me that they didn't know if they were going to adjust because they were only with me and family members for all of their lives. Finally they adjusted and ended up crying sometimes when I picked them up if they were in the middle of an activity. Have his mother give him something that smells like her and maybe a picture so that he can feel more secure.

Funnily adequate it does-if i'm unhappy approximately something a sturdy cry on someones shoulders or perhaps on my own seems to alleviate the rigidity and if I cry from giggling plenty i think severe-like i've got taken a chuffed pill or something

Is there a picture of his mother available for him to hold on to? Show him the picture and talk to him about how excited she'll be to see him when she gets home.
Have you checked his temperature? Maybe he's not feeling well and that's why he won't release his focus from his mom.
I know it's frustrating, but hang in there! Patience can be the key.

Next time that you babysit for him, make sure that his mother brings something along that he is familiar with, such as one of his favorite toys or anything else that he may be familiar with. He just needs to get used to you as easily as possible. Maybe she can even bring a picture of herself that you can reassure him with by telling him that his mommy will be back.

Wow has he ever been without his mother before?? Maybe just let him cry until he falls asleep or just leave things that he may need around him like his bottle and just let him work things out himself....If you are going to be the daily babysitter I would ask mom for something that conferts him at home and have her bring it

Maybe he's pissed cause you're supposed to be babysitting and you're on Yahoo Answers instead.

If you have children then you know they require almost constant attention.

Go talk to him.

Once he trusts you ...he'll settle down.
