I admit that I watched it and I kind of gotten into it. But if you think about it, what is the big deal about ordinary people singing songs previously written and recorded by other musicians? In my opinion, that requires very little creativity. It is like a karoake contest. Wouldn't it require more creativity to write original songs each week and then perform them? But realizing that most of our society is very shallow, people would not see how much work it takes to create the song. What do you think?

Exactly, and it's why I don't watch it. It isn't about the most talented person, it's about the person who wants to sell out the most.
All the winner wants is fame and popularity. They'll have a few years of fame, but won't last.

Singing is an awesome talent for all ages-
99% of TV shows are not suited for families and are just getting worse..Look at it this way.

Rather then see it for just people singing other songs, look past that and see what many of the winners and contestants have become? Carrie Underwood has won 5 awards or so and is better then most Country singers out there. Jennifer hudson just won a grammy etc..

Every year it gives 100,000 of males and females that have amazing talent (not all)..a chance to become disovered.

This year we have Melinda and Lakisha who are gonna blow the roof off. There are some other good ones too.

I think part of the hooplah and stuff that goes on during the Auditions are unnecesarry..But when it comes dowm to the final 12-it's a genuine, clean, exiting show!

They rake in the bucks, but thats a different story- It' free to watch at least.

You are right... it doesn't show much musical creativity to get up on stage and "interpret" someone else's song. But the show is called American Idol... and what they're looking for is someone to represent America's pop music. There are some artists out there that actually do write their own songs, it is becoming the new trend... but a lot of them are still getting the material handed to them and said, here... sing.
It used to be that "popular" music had a lot of musicality in it. Nowadays we run into a lot of stuff that's made up of 3 chords that isn't melodically interesting, it just repeats and repeats.
That being said... a lot of the people that were on American Idol are now starting to do their own thing (write/sing/produce their own music). So really... Idol is just a starting place for up and coming singers.

I think it's a matter of talent, and the fact that there are days that it is like watching a train-crash...just can't peel your eyes away from it.
Though i like the idea of writing songs, it is more of grooming new talent to be "American idols" and American Idols...don't often write their own songs. It's a matter of showing pure talent, drive, improvement, and versatility.

wouldn't know. Not enthralled or even mildly interested for that matter. I understand the judges don't even judge that the public does. In my opinion public voting should not occur until the final 2 if that's what they are going to do. But either way, waste of my time.

Very well put and an even more awesome commentary on what networks feel we like to watch on television. Gosh, I wish I had stock in mark Burnett....the Great Father of Reality TV!! He got us all in to this mess!!! LOL

In short, watching American Idol is like watching a train wreck or a donkey show...you can't look yet you can't look away. Part of its appeal is that they try to incorporate us as the viewer, in deciding the week to week fate of these strangers. Also, its killer to see their disappointment as we watch their dreams get dashed to the floor.

It is crazy, huh?? Wow!

The point is to see if you have the singing talent. It's not to see if you can be a songwriter. You are missing the premise of the show.

well my wife and I watch it every week. Yes they could write original songs but then if they didn`t sing a well known song, it would be harder to rate there talent.
