A year old and at least 20lbs. I would recommend the Britax Roundabout. It can face backwards until the child is ready to be turned around and it is good until the child is I think not sure 40lbs. My girls have been in that carseat since they were under a year and they are 3 now. I have had no problems with it, it is easily moved if need be, and it is comfortable for long rides!

A child is to have face backwards until they are 1 year-old and 22 lbs or more. If they are still under the 22 lbs but over 1 they are to still face backwards when in the carseat. There are several seats that are on the market that make a great toddler seat. The most important thing to look for is one that will hold your childs weight and has a 5 point harness. Graco makes some really nice seats that hold children 5 lbs to 40lbs that face both frontwards and backwards.

It really isn't an age thing, it is all about weight. Infant, rear facing carseats go up to 20 lbs and need to be rear facing. Once the baby is over 20 lbs, they can go in a full size, front facing seat. This seat should be used until a baby is at least 40 lbs. Booster seats are for older children. I don't know about specific brands. I bought them based on how they fit my child and how much protection and support they provided.

The must be at LEAST one year and over 20lbs to be forward facing. There are no ifs, ands or buts about this. They should really be rearfacing until age two or more. Children under 2 are 4x more likely to die in a crash.
You are looking for a convertible seat, not a booster.
Here are some to look at:
Britax Marathon, Cosco Scenera, Fisher Price Safe Voyage Deluxe, Safety 1st Uptown. Avoid the Graco Comfort Sport and anything by Evenflo. They are outgrown super early.

Info from cpsafety.com:
Rear-facing is the safest position the child can ride in. It is strongly recommended that all children stay rear-facing beyond the minimum requirements of 1 year and 20 lbs. Children should not be turned forward-facing until they reach the maximum rear-facing limits of a convertible seat (that allows rear-facing to at least 30 lbs). These limits are either the maximum rear-facing weight limit or when the top of their head is within one inch of the top of the seat shell, whichever comes first. While most parents are aware that they must keep their children rear-facing "until they are AT LEAST 1 year old AND 20 lbs", very few are told that there are significant safety benefits when a child remains rear-facing as long as the seat allows. For most children, rear-facing can and should continue well into the second year of life.

I have been told by my doctor to wait until they are 20lbs AND a year old. It's also recommended that you stick to that rule in the manuals of a car seat. I particularly like to stick to name brands such as Graco or Evenflo. I have had both types and they both worked great and I felt very safe with them. I would however suggest going with a 5-point harness car seat. It is the safest way to go. Car seats have been known to detach because of seat belt malfuctions. With the 5-point harness you have a back up restraint. Well hope that helps you. Good luck!

With our son it was state law for 1 year old and at least 20 or something lbs. We bought one more expensive kind and one a little less expensive for my car. Since he isn't in my car a whole lot. My thought is that's something you don't want to buy cheap!
