My advice would be to contact Sony right away. I haven't heard of any widespread issues and I, personally, haven't had any, but with it still being early in the console's life, things like this are bound to occur.
You're much more likely to receive adequate support from Sony if you contact them at this early stage in the console's life.

I don't own a PS3 but i have heard of many bugs and problems with them overheating, freezing, not ejecting games and so on. My advice would be to wait until just before the warranty runs out and then send it in saying that it locks up all the time and hope that they send you a new one from the second generation of the system.

If your PS3 has been locking up you may have been over heating it the PS3 is not meant for long hours of gaming it does not have enough fans to keep it cool for too long

Mine has been pretty solid, but I haven't been playing too many ps3 games. Mainly PS2 and the demos. Make sure you have the latest firmware, It seems like they're getting updated every thursday.
