I got a part in my highschool play. It's a boys part in Shakspeares play Much Ado About Nothing. Antonio. It's not a major character but it's definatly a boys part. I can chage it to a girls part if i want but i'm not sure if i should.

Should i play a boy or change it to a girl and cut out half my lines. I'm not to comfortable playing a boy.

If you are not comfortable playing boy don't!!!!!! Don't do anything you are not comfortable with in theater!!!! Trust me. You are not a boy and you don't want to play one so don't. Even if you have to cut out some of your lines that's okay. In theater if you are not wanting to do something then don't do it. It's make that part a lot harder then it is. It will be hard to acted like a boy and talk like a boy. You can't talk like a girl if you are playing a boy. So switch to girl. IT will be less stress on your voice and your self!!!!
Congrads on getting the part!!!
Good Luck!!!

Ah, yes. In Shakespeare, many roles (especially with young or teenage actors) can be performed by either a boy or a girl. I was in "Othello," and a 14 year old girl did very, very well in a male role. Acting is about becoming a character. It's no longer you standing on the stage, it's "Antonio"!!

If you can't decide, talk to your director. I'm SURE they'll help you make the right choice.

Now, get out there and break a leg!

OK...I agree with Grundle and Once.

But...and I say this with great reserve as not many writers are talented enough at changing plays.

If you can re-write the part without actually 'tearing' the fabric of the play I love seeing new twists on Shakespears work. I do not have enough familiarity with 'that' play to help.

But keep in mind...you really should not feel intimidated to play a male role. Even if you have to kiss a female character.

That is the magic of the stage...it changes the perception of the reality not the reality itself.

I agree with "grundle goat." This is a chance that comes along seldom, and it's rare that someone could actually pull it off. I didn't think I would be comfortable playing a boy either, but I did it... Peter Pan is almost never played by a boy. It was a blast... Play it all off... I even listed my name as Chris (Christin) in the program to throw people off.

Have fun, break a leg.

if youre not comfortable playing a character that isnt you then you shouldnt be acting. thats what acting is all about - challenging yourself to portray a believable character. stick with the male role or dont do it at all. acting isnt easy and not everyone can do it. stick your neck out and be the best antonio you can be. playing a female role and getting all your lines cut is a cop out. dare to do something different!

from experience taking the easy way out with a character will cause the play as a whole to suffer.
