I've never watched a pro wrestling match before and I caught a few on the USA channel last night. I'm watching the moves and stuff and I saw a few fake punches thrown and what not as well as backstage theatrics (guys in obviously staged dialogues with one another).

Is this a regular thing in wrestling? Is it normal for a 220 lb. guy to go up against a 350 lb. Samoan wrestler (who looks like he could be a defensive tackle for the Raiders)? In my opinion, that's a mismatch.

I remember John Cena going after a guy (Randy Orton) who slammed some poor guy against a metal folding chair. Apparently, John was "partnered" with Randy's "victim" and they showed them before the match, with the guy telling John that he didn't need his help but thanked him after the match for helping him out. Is this kind of stuff staged? After the folding chair incident, the poor guy was lying in the ring and NO medical personnel was there!

Is the trash talk staged too?

The program you saw was WWE's RAW, which is what the company itself calls sports entertainment.

It's a mixture of scripting and ad-lib.
Some of the backstage segements are scripted out as well as some of what is said in the ring.
The wrestling portion is also a mixture, the opponents will go through some of the moves with each other before a match, often if there are moves that they are less familiar with. Some matches are fully scripted out move by move and some are partially scripted and the wrestlers will call the moves in the ring to get to the predetermined outcome.

The people are actors who have been trained in how to throw and receive a punch so it looks real as well as how to accomplish some of the more spectacular moves so that neither person gets seriously hurt. They know how to take and receive a chair shot so that it looks good but they're still able to walk away from the ring afterwards.

So in general, the show is scripted but I don't call it fake. These professionals do get bruises and injuries doing this and they do risk getting seriously hurt either by their body having taken too much punishment or by someone messing up a move.

Years ago professional wrestlers were not to break character when they were in public and they acted as though every match was real. Now the WWE calls their talent "sports entertainers" and "superstars" not wrestlers and in various autobiographies the author talks about how the matches were put together as well as the storylines they were involved in.

Anymore, just about anything is normal in wrestling as it's entertainment that happens to be based around wrestling and the actors are required to be physically trained for it.

IF YOU SEE IT ON TV-IT'S STAGED. The only thing in wrestling not scripted is the actual wrestling part of a match, except for certain parts. Most of the dialogue is too, all though they allow some of the more talented guys to ad-lib. To answer your question it is 90% staged and 10% ad-lib.

why do u think its called entertainment? The pro wrestling you see has very little actual wrestling. It is staged.. the characters are not real- they are just like any tv show... people go by aliases and have persona's that are not themselves.... Kurt angle was actually a real wrestler and even went to the olympics. Im shocked and appalled that all of his talent has now been wasted on "entertainment television" he barely gets to show his real talent

My son got into wrestling by watchin wwe .... he knows what real wrestling is now and does not watch wwe anymore ... he says that its fake and nobody actually wrestles.. all this from a 10 yr old... He is now going to state competiton tomorrow ...so I trust he knows what real wrestling is..the stuff on tv is just for the $$$

It is all intricately staged. They know who is going to win and when the match with end and how it will end. The refs actually have a large part in the match. They tell the wrestlers through codes and signals what needs to be happening. For instance when a ref makes an X about his head with his arms that means someone is REALLY hurt.

The entire thing is fake. Everything is staged and the "wrestlers" know exactly what they are going to do and who will win. It still looks like some of those moves would hurt though, doesnt it? My husband loves to watch it but i go in the other room and find something else to watch. Its the man's soap opera.

Its sports entertainment. The wrestlers go through intense training to entertain the audience. Yes its all pre-arranged and staged. It is all decided on just what the fans want to see..what makes the most money and sells the most tickets. They have to make a living and they do just that being wonderful actors.
