Of course it is...for some people, rumors and falsehoods can destroy an ordinarily stellar reputation...however, lying and making misstatements to cover up a truth is just as bad...
I have done business (or not done business) with people based on their 'reputation"...for some, it's all they have...

Yes it is but don't be over protective because if someone just does to be mean they're just losers and it doesn't matter so my answer is depends on the situation.
