you need to use something if it interferes with his breathing. he may have an ear infection which can't be taken care of WITHOUT medicine. If you have ever had and ear infection it is miserable. Does he have a fever? Even if he does not have an ear infection, it may turn into one if you don't treat him. Lying down a lot causes mucus to flow into the ear canal. you need to take him in to a doctor. a week is too long to let it go.

I do not like using medicine for myself or my children either, but I have found out that many times a cold will get worse because you do not treat its symptoms with medicine to clear up the mucous. It can lead to infections that end up way worse than the cold. Ear infections, bronchitis, sinus infections...we've gotten them all from colds that we let go because we didn't want to use a simple decongestant or something to just dry up the sinuses. I really trust my childrens' pediatrician, and I give them what he suggests after I explain all their symptoms over the phone or take them in to be seen.

Have you taken him to the doc? Im sure your doctor could suggest some ways other than medicine to help your son. But I would take him for sure, your son might have RSV or something.

You should take your baby to the doctor if he is having trouble breathing. It is always better to be safe than sorry. Also, Johnson and Johnson make a great vapor bath bubbles for babies with colds.

Since it's gone on for a week, he should see his doctor - he might have an infection (either in his sinuses or his lungs) that'll require antibiotics to clear up.
