I must agree totally with Sheriam on this one. I too am a full time barefooter and very rarely put on shoes. After being able to experience the freedom and comfort of being barefoot, wearing shoes all the time would be like asking you to wear gloves every time you leave the house. I love to feel the earth and all its wonderfull textures benieth my feet.
To answer the question, YES, I have walked down the street barefoot for all the world to see and will keep barefootin' for the rest of my life.

During the hot Florida Summer, the streets can get as hot as burning asphalt.
Because that's what it is.
It makes it very hard to walk barefoot.
But, for retarded reasons, I have done it then. I will also, almost assuredly, end up doing it again.
As far as walking down the street when it isn't burning my feet- Well, it has never crossed my mind that I shouldn't do it.
Why is it a sociological issue?

I have been barefoot for ten years and I do not intend to wear shoes ever again.
Just in case anyone's interested, in spite of persistant myths there are NO health laws requiring footwear in the US, it's NOT against the law to drive barefoot, and in spite of calling around none of the barefooters on a large mailing list I'm on have ever found an insurance company requiring or even recommending footwear for customers.
It's not that dirty, my feet are on the ground and there they remain, I don't lick them, I don't put them on the table next to my food... our skin is made to keep pathogens out. We're far more likely to catch diseases through our hands, touching surfaces many people touch all day like shopping carts, railings, buttons, money etc. With our hands we're far more likely to touch our faces and food even if we do wash them before sitting down for dinner; who doesn't sometimes wipe their hair out of their face, lean their chin on their hand, or eat a single cookie or candybar without washing up? Then the pathogens on our skin can enter our bodies, while those germs that are on my feet stay there, on the outside.
Nor is glass particularly dangerous; I never divert my step when there's broken glass laying around anywhere, I just step lightly and I get a tiny splinter *maybe* once a year, never had a cut. I cut or scrape my hands more often than my feet, but for some reason few people suggest wearing gloves all day long....

No, I'm way more concerned about the condition of my feet than appearing in public dressed in a T-shirt and cutoffs (which I do in the summer). I need my fet to be perfectly pink and smooth and barefoot ruins that and causes calluses for me.

I love being barefoot at home, at the beach or even at the park. Being barefoot on the street, no matter what you're wearing, is a very dirty thing to do. The could be glass, vomit, dog pooh etc. I don't think you should do it anymore.

I live in a busy city and there is no way I would walk around barefoot. You can really hurt yourself or get an infection that way. Save the bare feet for the beach!
