Neem oil seems to be the best natural repellent, not only does it protect from bites but also reduces reactions to the bites.NeemCare Herbal Insect Repellant costs £3.99 for travel size (50ml) and £5.99 for 100ml. For stockists, call 01294-277344.
also Bioforce's Neem-based Herbal Insect Repellent costs £6.40 for 100ml, phone 01294-277344 to order.
Also mosquitoes hate lavender & citronella oils, you can mix citronella, eucalyptus or lavender oils and dissolve 10-20 drops into an eggcup full of the base oil (almond oil but some people also use olive oil).
from I found this natural mosqito repellent & insect repellent from this site that gives good info on natural remedies, diet, vitamins etc.
PS> it's an excellent site for reference for a range of ailemnts etc .just type in the relevant words in search(eg mosquito)

Lemongrass Oil is supposed to be very effective. Alternatively, there's a repellent called MozzyOff, that claims to contain all natural ingredients (quote) : 'After years of research and development, testing in the field and independent clinical trials at the Pesticides Research Group in Scotland, MozzyOff Cocktail is now available to make your outdoor experience more enjoyable. Our patented blend of natural plant oils has been carefully balanced to work in harmony with nature and your body and is extremely effective at repelling flying insects particularly midges, mosquitoes, black-fly and gnats. Elements of MozzyOff Cocktail also have skin soothing properties to ease the discomfort of previous bites. - Suppliers to the UK Forestry Commission. The second website is worth a visit as it gives tips on how to deter the mozzies, plus lots of links, etc!

If you are looking for a natural mosquito repellent, you've probably noticed that there are many natural topical products available, all with different active ingredients. So which one works?
Fennel
Thyme
Clove oil
Neem oil
Garlic

I dislike using DEET, but do use it because it works, and the alternatives are potentially worse. Maybe this summer I'll field test some other things.
That said, Wikipedia has some interesting things to say about lemon eucalyptus oil and icaridin (picaridin). Although icaridin is not a natural ingredient, it may be worth considering.
So, if you want 'natural', consider a lemon eucalyptus oil formulation. Bear in mind that "natural" does not necessarily equate to "good"; there are plenty of very natural poisons that are quite effective at killing.

I made some tomato and garlic wine recently. It really smells quite strong, but it tastes not too bad. I suspect that it will be a fairly good repellent.
I thought alcohol actually attracted mosquitoes due to the blood rising to the surface of your skin. (vaso-dilation)

You can get citronella plugins for your room (or use a citronella candle) and a citronella roll on as you should not put the oil directly onto your skin. I also drop a few drops of citronella and tea tree oils in my bath so the smell on my skin will put the beasties off. Tea tree is also good if you do get bitten.

Citronella extract mixed with unscented baby oil if you are going to use it on your skin. Brewer's yeast pills if you want to avoid mosquitoes bites without applying anything. Both work well.
