it's been five years that i've actually seen her, I saw once in july. and we had such a good time. I know that she has been burned by some of our former classmates. That she wont even set foot in our hometown. I can actually say that she is probably the best friend i've ever had. I want to let her know that i'm sorry that I havent kept in touch with her over the years.

If your last meeting was an indication, I would say you can still patch things up between you two. You did not do anything to drive her away, did you? Although, you did not really make any effort to keep in touch when she left town you can still make it up to her.
Just give her a casual phone call, tell her exactly how you are feeling, and that you miss her friendship. Tell her you want to continue being best friends with her if she is okay with that. If she is truly a friend to you, she will have no problem about it.

why not invite her over for chat or for coffie at a cafe if it goes well she will ask for ur email and number and then u can switch that you will always stay in touch.
