If you have already done graduate work in the field (e.g., a master's degree from a different school) -- then yes it is possible. If you are starting after getting your BS -- then it is very difficult to do.

You usually have to take three years of classes to get a PhD. You usually have to take a two day written exam after the second year and an oral exam by the end of the third year. This leaves little time to write a dissertation. That usually takes an additional one to five years.

I did my Ph.D. in a little less than 4 years, which is the standard. You'd need to be really exceptional to do anything less than this. Good luck.

If you work at it. most don't have the resolve to spend the effort.
