Pardon a quick rant, but I hate when people cut and paste huge articles from Wikopedia instead of just pasting the link.
What's been skipped is that Henry Ford was an engineer who liked tinkering. He was something of an inventor, but greatly admired Thomas Edison and the two were very good friends. With the money he made from the Ford Motor Company, Henry Ford also founded the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. The first building brought to the site was Thomas Edison's workshop from Menlo Park NJ. It's a major site of historical and cultural merit and a wonderful place to spend a vacation.
He was also the owner of the Detroit Lions football team, which his family still owns. He founded a major research hospital that bears his name. There are any number of philanthropies that he endowed, including the Ford Foundation.

You mean the man inside, behind the elementary text book version?
If you dig a little deeper you'll find that Henry Ford besides building cars was a extreme right-wing political activist. He was involved in a plot to assassinate President Franklin D. Roosevelt and supported Hitler's movement in Europe. He was anti-Semitic and published a booklet that he had distributed across the U.S. called "The International Jew". He hired convicts out of prison to beat maim and murder workers who were trying to form a union for better wages.
He was certainly no American hero if that is what you are being taught. He was a bigot, a ruthless killer (though he hired people to do his dirty work for him) and a exploiter of the human downtrodden for the purpose of self interest and profiteering.
I know there will be a dozen thumbs down to my answer, but the facts speak for themselves. If the truth hurts too bad.

He was the founder of the Ford Motor Company. He developed a way to mass produce cars, which resulted in lower production & and sale costs. His Model T became available and affordable to more of the mainstream public than had any of his predecessors. His manufacturing assembly lines completely changed the way that many products were produced - not just cars.

Inventor of the first mass production automobile....NOT the FIRST automobile, the first MASS PRODUCTION one. Model T's were cheap and affordable and allowed Americans the freedom they craved.
