Athens is a rather safe place for all; there are pick-pockets like everywhere in the world and you should pay attention when you pay the bill at the restaurant or when you take a cab. However, crime, in the usual meaning of the word is rather rare and when it happens, it never affects tourism...
There used to be an anti-American feeling but has gone loose during the last years.
Come and see for yourself!

Very safe for all. Crime is very low, American tourists all have a good time here. Just be careful with taxi drivers charging you more than they should (ask at the hotel how much would be normal to pay for the distance you are going), from the airport to the city the charge should be 20-30 Euro.
Forget all this about the Canadian flag. First of all, we can tell an American on sight!lol. Second, there is no problem for Americans and no one will bother you, I promise, unless you are the American Ambassador. Antiamericanism is confined to Bush's policy and not the private individuals. Sure there are protests towards the American embassy, but no American tourist will ever hear a complaint.

Athens is the safest capital in Europe. Europe is a lot safer than any major American city. There is an influx of petty crime perpetrated by the hords of illegal migrants, so please keep your valuables safely when in public transport. I do speak from experience.
The anti-Americanism in Greece is mostly against the arrogance of the Bush administration and Bush himself. I'd say it is justified. If you wish, you could engage the locals in a political debate and you will find them far better informed than the average American.

Athens, although a big city, is safe, you just have to take the normal precautions you would even in a village. Just avoid the area of Omonia in the night (it is not really dangerous, but you may feel unsafe) and take care of your personal belongings when using public transportation. The real petty crime we have are guys on motorbikes who drive near a pedestrian (mostly a female, walking in the middle of the street) and grab their bags. You may also encounter a lot of beggars, but they are harmless. As for anti-americanism, well yes, we often protest against the american politics (no wonder), but tourists have no problem, on the contrary, they are definitely welcome by the tourism industry and the rest of us have nothing against them - except that they are not Europeans (lol)

Athens and generally speaking Greece has low criminality. Everything that has been mentioned above are right. Everywhere you go you will be very welcome. Politics has nothing to do with the people. As a Greek I can assure you that there are not bad feelings between USA citizens and Greeks. The majority of the Greek families have relatives who live and work in the States (my family included).
Enjoy your stay, relax, and try to feel the fragrances and beauties of the Greek land.
Have a nice stay.

Athens is a great place for Americans to visit. Just avoid a place called "Pub Luv" and any dark taverns they call "coffee shops"
