Because Jack has a monosyllabic edge to it, I think. In the Magnificent Seven, Yul Brynner's character is called Chris - and I've always thought to myself: "A gunfighter called Chris? Nah!"
Mind you, there is a tendency to call heroes Todd and Scott which are worse than Jack.

hmmm don't forget jack of all trades, maybe they still think you don't know jack. it is a popular name as long as i can remeber one of the first nursery rhymes i learned was jack and jill.
