Moonroof is better as William has pointed out..
Sunroof is simply a window with no shade. Moonroof has a shade and also can tilt instead of just open..

Years ago a sun roof was a translucent or transparent panel that would open for ventilation. The Ford Motor Company introduced the first moon roof in the mid-60's on the Mercury and Lincoln cars. The moon roof was an opaque panel, usually painted to match to auto, that slid open into the roof. Now days a sun roof or a moon roof are synonymous.

Um, no nick. Sorry. Moonroof term was around long before them. Maxine is much closer to the truith- Ford had glass roofs on their Galaxie 500 line in the 1950's.
A sunroof is clear/tinted but transparent where a moonroof is solid. A steel one is a moonroof. A glass one is a sunroof. The panel shade you slide up does not change it from one to the other in name, just function.
The original term meant to let you see the sun in the car or open at night to see the moon. The original defining difference, especially during the 1980's was a sunroof was most ofton a glass panel that simply tilted up to open or could be completely removed where the moon roof would slide into the roof of the car or tilt up at the rear.
I work in the auto industry.....

Actually, "Moonroof" is a term invented by Honda that refers to a glass sunroof. Virtually all glass sunroofs have shades, but Honda was the first to release a glass sunroof in the 1980's. To set themselves apart they called it a "Moonroof". Before, most sunroofs were painted metal but since the early 90's almost everyone has gone to glass.
The germans still refer to them as 'sunroofs', whereas japanese and american companies call them moonroofs. Almost all of them are glass, though Porsche still offers metal sunroofs so as to not detract from the visual design of the car.
