y=13/2 (same as y= 6.5)

3y + 14 = 5y + 1

put the y's on both sides

14= 5y + 1 - 3y

add like terms

14= 2y +1 (to get this I added 5y + -3y)

redo addition

2y + 1=14
2y=13

devide by both sides

y = 13 devided by 2 or 13/2

It is not necisary to put it into decimal form but 13/2 = 6.5

3y+14=5y+1 minus 3y from both sides of the equal sign.
-3y -3y
14=2y+1 Now minus 1 from both sides
-1 -1
13=2y Now divide 2 from both sides
/2 /2
6.5=y
Is that what you wanted? Did you want something else the the value of x? there are many things to can do witht the equation. I hope this is the one you wanted. Did you get how i got the numbers to divide and minus? If you are still confused email me cause i will help unlike some other people on there.

3y + 14 = 5y + 1

(take away "3y" from each side (whatever you do on one side, do to the other), to remove the smaller of the y coefficients, therefore putting all of the y's together)
(3y-3y) + 14 = (5y-3y) + 1
14 = 2y + 1

(again, take 1 away from each side, as your main intention is to place letters on one side of the = and numbers on the other)
(14-1) = 2y + (1-1)
13 = 2y

(now, since 2y is the same as 2 x y, or could be seen as (2)(y), you have to divide by the coefficient (ie. 2), to allow the letter to be on its own side; the number on the other)
13
____= y
2
[13 / 2 = y]
6.5 = y

Hope you understand now that you are basically trying to put letters on one side, numbers on the other ;)

3y + 14=5y + 1
-3y -3y

14=2y +1
-1 -1

13=2y
/2 /2

y=13/2
or
y= 6 1/2
or
y= 6.5

put all y on one side, other numbers on the other => 5y-3y = 14-1 => 2y = 13 => y = 13/2

3y+14=5y+1 first you have to subtract 1 from each side.
-1 -1
3y+13=5y then you need to subtract 3y from each side.
-3y -3y
13=2y now you just divide each side by 2. The 2's on the 2y side will cancell leaving you y and on the 13 side you get the fraction 13 over 2

13/2=y and it is solved.

y=13/2 or y=6.5( i just divided the fraction 13/2 to get 6.5)
All your looking to do is get like terms on one side. Hope i explained it enough.

y=6.5

Alright, what you do is subtract 3y from 5y to get 14=2y + 1. After that you subtract 1 from 14 to get 13=2y. Once you get that you divide both sides by to to get y by itself

you need to do this your self next time!!!
3y + 14 = 5y + 1
3y + 14 (-1) = 5y
3y + 13 = 5y
13 = 5y (-3y)
13 = 2y
13/2 = y
6.5 = y
