I'm not interested in the opinion of those who are convinced of an afterlife. I mean no disrespect by that, but I am interested in hearing the opinion of people who suspect that death is the end of sentience. To me, the fear isn't from pain or suffering after one dies, because that would be irrational. My fear is non-being, that is, this world, which is known through me, will end forever. Some people compare this to sleep, but sleep is partly dreams, and the sleeper is generally convinced after his rest that he/she will awake. My fear is the idea of never awaking again. What are your thoughts?

I have thought of this since chilhood and these thoughts have played a huge role in my anxiety and depression. I am scared of the nothingness too. I don't believe in an afterlife and i do think that once we die---that is it. It is extremely scary to think about it so I try my hardest to live each day to its absolute fullest. Maybe time will change my mind and ease my fear...but for now I am in the boat with you.

The big sleep Mmmm. Catholics have recently went through Lent, this in some way describes there belief in the natural circle of life. They come home from church with a dob of ash on there foreheads. The ash represents the fact that we all originate from carbon and that in the end we all return to the mother earth as carbon. Catholics believe in life after death. Is this life dorment until this piece of carbon that you once were is brought back to life wheather that be in animal or vegetable form. Well it got me thinking when i heard the story and when you apply a little science to it, well it makes logical sence. Its the timecale thing that gets me. So in short there is life after death just not as we know it. Think about it. More positive thoughts will flow thereafter regarding death. Meantime live every day as if it was your last and i think you will have a most fullfilling life with out regrets.

If feel the same. If I think about it for only a few minutes it really upsets me. The idea of nothingness for ever and ever and ever really scares me. As you say you sleep, but you do dream, although most of the time you are not aware you are sleeping so in some ways death is a bit like that.
I suppose its a bit like before we are born, we didnt know anything then because we didnt exist.
Im going to stop now before I get upset. I can feel it coming.

That is exactly how I feel. And sad to say it makes it even worse to think that the world will keep going after I'm gone.
I'm pretty sure there is no afterlife and I've had this thoughts since I was a kid even though my mother is a religious person.
It never seems to go away, I guess if you are smart you simply know how the world really works, but I have to admit it does feel pretty crappy.

I have the same fears also for me its just the thought of dying it scares the crap out of me. THe only thing that pulls me through those fears is knowing that when you pass we will be living like we are know but in heaven and there will be no sickness, no killing you will never have to worry about anything. Also look at what is around us know what amazing things he created you have to believe its 100% better up there..

I'm terrified of never being concious again, of knowing that as long as the universe exists, and indeed beyond that, there will never be another me. Not in a million years, not in a billion years, time will go on for ever and ever and I will never exist again.
