My wife works in a business office and has been wearing neckties to work ever since I have known her. She will wear a tie with a suit in a very masculine look, or under a sweater in a school girl fashion, but the tie is always done to the top, with the top button fastened. I think the look is a little severe, especially considering that her hair is cut very short. She can look a little mannish, but wears nice jewelry and makeup so not too butch. She insists there is nothing wrong with her appearance.

I personally like the look, if it's done right.

It sounds a bit ... masculine though, the way she's wearing it.

Neckties under a suit (with pants) with short hair, isn't really good, but neckties under a suit (with skirts) could be cute.

Thinner neckties are more ladylike (and coming back in fashion), than the thick neckties that guys wear.

Keep in mind however, that neckties could be her signature look/style, and what defines her personal unique style. (Just like how some women ALWAYS wear sunglasses, or little gloves, or carry a fan).

It might look very nice with a sweater, a white collared shirt, a thin necktie (a la Gwen Stefani) and a skirt.
