The same way all of the other talk show gurus did, by having a show in the 80's that wasn't afraid to sling dirt. Funny thing is somewhere into the 90's she managed to turn it into commodity and now it's an empire. Very determined woman.

she parlayed her tv news gig into a talk show, bought/founded her own production distribution company, went into the movies, magazines etc etc. she is a very shrewd business woman.
