I work in a fairly large office. I am very quiet and come to work to do my work and not socialize all day long like others do. I work through my lunch at times (get paid for it) and often work past 5:00 p.m. The bosses seem to talk to the people who socialize all day long rather than do their work. I am not jealous but am baffled by this. Do you think they ignore me because they know their work is getting done or are they just plain afraid of me?

They could be afraid of you b/c you have never showed your personality, they dn't know what you are thinking in your head, thinking you might be a stuck up. I think it is not good to be unsocialble. Having interpersonal relations is very important, people tend to be hired or have upward mobility when they know how to network. You should start talking some more, finding how they do their work efficiently so you dn't have to work through lunch and overtime(or are you doing that to avoid social contact?), ask some questions about your work, then start small talks, that way, you feel more relax with the department. Another bad thing you are doing is that you are so quiet they might try to take advantage of you because you seem like someone who couldn't stand up for yourself or say anything because you are afraid (could be the reason why you have big workload through long hours). Work on that. If you feel intimidated, practice conversations by yourself, think of a story to tell etc. and tell those to connect w/ others. I know it will be hard since it feels weird to suddenly speak up at work, but you can start by saying good morning or bye.

I think you answered your own question. You are quiet and don't socialize. You probably come off as standoffish - people probably assume you don't want to talk. Which it sound slike you don't. And you do seem jealous. How do you know everyone else isn't doing their work? Perhaps they work more efficiently than you and they have their work completed in time to do a little socializing. And why do you have to work through lunch and stay late? It sounds as though you spend your time watching what everyone else is doing! Just because a worker takes the time to speak with their boss does not make them a bad employee. You should try it. I think you will find your work enviroment much more enjoyable and less stressful.

The squeaky wheel gets the grease. you may need to do something to get yourself noticed, so that you are remembered when raises are calculated. If you do not want to chat, maybe bring in baked goods, or keep candy on your work space to make yourself memorable.
