I had a similar problem for a long time, after sitting too long, particularly on a hard chair, I felt pain shooting through my body upon standing up, and it took a while for the ache to go away. I'm sure it was caused by circulation being reduced and then suddenly coming back, sort of like when one of your limbs falls asleep, except I never felt numbness, just the pain. I never had a problem with lying down even though my bed was pretty hard (futon).

I solved my problem mainly by avoiding sitting too long in hard chairs and using cushions. Before you invest in a new mattress maybe you can "borrow" some friends' or relatives' beds for an hour (read a book to pass the time) and see if it works better for you. Someone might also have an inflatable air bed you could borrow for the night. Try lying on the floor for a while to see if it's better or worse than the bed.

If you can't get comfortable anywhere then you should probably talk to a doctor since this could be a symptom of a significant circulation problem.

Sounds like you need a new bed. If you can't afford it try this--I added not only a foam top to my mattress, I also added a synthetic "feather" bed. I made such a difference. Foam tops are available at Target for around $50 for queen size. The synthetic "feather" bed I got at Bed, Bath and Beyond for $75.
