Birth control pills do not cause weight gain. It's a common myth. The only contraceptive proven to cause significant weight gain is the depo-provera shot. The myth that contraceptive pills cause weight gain is based on two things. One, that the older pills had such high dosages of hormones that it was possible and two, that many women go on 'the pill' during puberty or in their early to mid twenties when a weight gain of 10 to 15 lbs of 'post puberty' weight and the slowing down of ones metabolism is normal whether or not one is on the pill.

As for excessive mood swings, that's a different story. Birth control pills can cause mood swings or depression especially in women who have had previous episodes of depression, but they can also do no such thing. It really depends on you as an individual and your body chemistry. What 'causes mood swings for one woman could lessen severe pms mood swings for another and for yet another, it could have no effect on mood at all. Talk to your doctor and he or she will give you a pill to start on. If after trying it, you experience mood swings or some other unpleasant side effect, you can switch brands to find what's right for you.

Try the NuvaRing. I used it before I was married. It was easy to use and safe. I didn't gain any weight.
