Myspace is OK, but DON'T rely on it!! I don't know how many band's friend requests I delete it a week. Anybody who thinks they can carry a tune is on Myspace.
Get out and find places to play. Get your friends to bring their friends. Find festivals and events that need music. Then use things like Myspace for people who hear you to stay connected to you.
Also, find local and college radio stations that play local bands. Great way to get heard, especially if the DJ likes you.

Dude i love Saosin i can check them out and then tell some of my friends to add them.
But yeah sometimes we have bands come to our school and the kids go crazy for them.
Do they play shows anywhere outside of their area?
Oh and do they have a purevolume??
If not they should make one and make all their songs downloadable so that kids can listen to them.

Have you tried builing a band page site on MYSPACE?
There are a lot of bands on the site and they use the site mostly for networking and promotion.
You can also upload a few of your songs for people to listen to and enjoy.
Best of luck!!

Find different ways to promote the band locally at nearby colleges. Find an unusual method to advertise gigs at the colleges (one band I knew of used paper plates as their band posters, because it was such an original tie-in to their name).
Best to you,

they need to get on myspace pages of bands that they sound like, request to be friends w/ the same people who are friends w/ the other bands. make cds and give them away for free. go to concerts of similar bands and pass out free cds w/ the website written on it. make fliers and and take them to local cd/music stores. give your demo to as many other bands as possible.

go to any local place that has other samll bands, and ask them if your band could play there. If you want, give them a copy of a song that your group does.
