For non-violent crime, as is being debated in the media. Does it mean men will also be allowed to walk free, or will it just free up a few places in order to lock up a few more men?

In a world that talks constantly of equality, does this not stink of inequality. A man and a woman could both at the same time burgle 2 different houses, the woman walks free and the man could get 6 months. Fair, i dont think so, What do you think? And remember, despite what the femanists tell you, prison affects men as it does women, we are, after all, all human. So how could locking up a man be any different than a woman?

dopy dora, there are thousands of men in prison for non-violent crime, the same situation as the women who may be let out. Figures are irrelavant. We should be treated equal. What would you say if women were locked up for twice as long as a man was. You'd be in uproar, admit it.

artlyb, The govt is considering never putting the women in prison in the first place, and why should men be seperated from their kids and not women, the blokes i know all do their share with the kids. They need a dad just as much as a mum, or do you think a dads roll stops when his trousers are pulled back up?

Foghorn, is battery the only crime commited in your world then. What about theft, which makes up about 90% of all crime, drug peddling etc etc etc, And what makes you think men are the only ones who commit domestic violence. About 20% of d/v is commited by women, add to this the cases that are never reported because the man is too ashamed and the figure gets closer still, my point is that if men who commit non-violent crime should be locked up, why should women be allowed free? Read the question!

Non violent criminals are still criminals regardless of sex. Time should be served male or female.

What has the gender of a person got do do with the issue?
The only people who should lose their liberty are those who have committed a violent act or murder against another person, the rest should be dealt with by way of a community punishment and pay in full any compensation to the victim of the crime.
Only if they fail to respond to the order should they be sent to prison.
A life sentence is 15 years which is usually reduced to 9 years and with good behaviour a person may be released after 5 or 6 years imprisonment.
It should be a life sentence for the worst type of violent crime and mean natural life, some may say that is harsh, well they should have thought about that before they committed the crime.

Men are human? Are you sure? *smile*

I don't think women should be set free any sooner than men should be set free. The media, IMO, likes to stir up trouble. They don't offer solutions just topics that go nowhere and prove nothing. These women are in prison for committing crimes, it is not better for society to have the women running free any more than it would be good if we let the men go free. All crimes affect society and if these people can not live by our laws prison or deportation is the only solution. Deportation if they are American or not!

I find this question hard to take seriously.

The bulk of the battery cases that appear at the Court where I work are over women. Consequently, if you kept the women locked up us men would have nothing to fight about and we could all go out, talk about sport, eat a takeaway and get magnificently pissed together.

Yeah, this post won't get me a 'best answer' or even a thumbs up. It is pure hyperbole, a reaction to the ludicrous question and the even more questionable answers.

I think your spot on, equality is for both sexes, otherwise its men who face the inequality, women have battled against for decades. Same crime, same stretch

Many women prisoners have young children - as do some of the men -but if you agree that kids particularly need their Mums you might take a different view of the suggestion that some women prisoners who have served a good chunk of their sentences might be released early. In an case, the Govt. is considering releasing some men early too - so there goes your equality argument.

Actually, most of the folks in American prisons should be set free.

There are about 400,000 violent criminals in American prisons - roughly the same number of violent felons as were locked up in the 1970's.

But there are over 1.8 million non violent criminals locked up - a far cry from the 200,000 non violent offenders incarcerated 30 years ago.

I believe that all of those 1.8 million non violent criminals should be relased - and, to keep the jails empty, victimless crimes like drugs, prostitution and gambling should be decriminalized.

Yes, I agree, same treatment for men and woman, it wouldn't be fair if woman got out and men didn't, I think it would cause too much controversy.

Man , woman or teenager that is old enough and responsible enough to know what they are doing, should all be treated equal.

when it comes to crime
a crime is a crime whichever way you look at it.

as the saying goes
"if you can't do the time, don't do the crime"

BAD idea. I say eliminate the violent repeaters permanently and that'll make more room for everyone (both men and women). A scumbag is a scumbag, regardless of gender.
