It all depends on the guy and the girl, but you definitely don't want something too strong or too chemically-smelling. Make sure you steer clear of any smells that were popular when your dad or grandpa was a young buck. Girls these days will think you smell like an old man if you use a smell that your grandpa used to wear.

Generally speaking, you want to smell fresh and clean, that's a pretty safe bet. Sometimes a hint of muskiness to the smell isn't bad. A hint of vanilla tones in the smell can be really yummy and as long as its done right it won't smell too girly. Avoid things that smell like Pine Sol or rubbing alcohol.

And don't wear too much of it, only wear just enough that someone right up close can smell it on you. No one should be able to smell your cologne from multiple feet away, that's too much.

You want the cologne to add a hint of smell to you, not cover up the way YOU smell. (cologne is not a substitute for good hygeine!) You want the smell of the cologne and the smell of you and the the smells from the other products you use (shaving cream, soap, deoderant, fabric softener, etc) you want all those smells to go nicely together so that combined, you have a nice smell that is unique to you. That way when you lend her your jacket it smells like you and she wants to bury her nose in the jacket all evening thinking of you when you're not there.

So just pick out a nice smell that's not too expensive (since you'll probably use it on a pretty regular basis you don't want it to cost a fortune, and it really doesn't need to cost a fortune) don't lay it on too heavy, and make sure your other products' smells don't completely clash with it.

The Body Shop has some nice, clean, manly smells for reasonable prices. I say go there first before shelling out a ton of money on some designer brand name cologne. Most guys don't even go in there so they don't know there are guy smells for sale there, which is good for you because you don't want to smell like everyone else. You want your smell to be different so when a girl smells it, she is reminded of you.

Try combining smells that go together for a more unique smell. If your cologne has vanilla tones in it, use vanilla bodywash to play off of that. So the end result is more natural smelling and less chemical smelling, and more unique to you. Another example would be a fresh clean scent cologne and a fresh clean scent shaving cream and a fresh clean scent deoderant. Then you only need a tiny bit of cologne and overall you'll smell nice and clean.

So to answer your question, the sexiest smells are subtle and unique to you so that they don't remind the girl of some other guy, or worse, her ex boyfriend. And if the smell matches the smells in your other personal care products, it will smell more natural and less fake, and that is attractive.
