I believe that this is the ONLY offensive word left in the American language. All of the power of other words has been used up.

Of course, I tend not to say it in public, but I use it around friends all of the time. It is my opinion that until the fangs are taken from this word, it will continue to be a hurtful and malignant curse in the American lexicon. By hiding the word away, it is simply given more weight.

It seems to have no weight when a black person uses it, but when a white person uses it all hell breaks loose. I'm not sure that using it more often would solve that.

You CAN if it is for homework and the history of the word. I did use the word once on ebay and it turned up some interesting outdated toys like a mechanical bank and childrens books. But to use it pejoratively to insult someone else can get you in a lot of trouble nowadays. A great question would be (maybe other yahoos can answer this.) :

Why do African-Americans use the "N" word amongst eachother but feel insulted if someone outside their race/ethnic backround say it to them? Why is that OK?

I think that it should not be used.
With that being said my personal opinion is that a black person has every right to use the word if they choose to do so. I think that the way it is used now is somewhat empowering a word with a very hurtful history behind it.

It has a negative connotation, and is derogatory. So I don't think you will find it used in a positive way. Although, blacks will often use it towards one another in a more casual conversation. Unlike words like gay, which can mean different things, the n word is always used in a bad insulting context.

what if I were to say, "wutup *****?"
I suppose that way it is not offensive like the others say. It most certainly is quite the opposite from saying something along the lines of, "look at that stupid, dirty ******!" or "What a stupid ******!"
I have experienced that type of slander in baton rouge where I grew up. I lived in a very hicky type of town and there I was the only non-white kid there. I have been called ****** and sand ******. I am not black.
