Miami Beach to South Beach?

I'm interested in going to Miami Beach for my b-day, but I keep seeing stuff about South Beach. Is there a difference and what is the distance between them? (I didn't plan on renting a car).

i think there is a difference cuz me and my brother walked as far as we could in south beach and it was definitely not all of miami. stay on south beach! we drove to the mall on rt.1 it was pretty far.

dont go to eather, go to cape hateras in north carolina. The best place EVER!!
