Start here to cleanup your computer...
One should do a disk cleanup everyday and defrag two or three times a week if the computer is used moderately.
1. You may need to do a Disk Cleanup..and be sure you have all the boxes checked....
2. Defrafg your C drive or whatever is your main harddrive... Make sure you have selected the C Drive.... This is called a Disk Defragmenter...
For both go to :
Start...
programs..
accessories...
system tools..
Do this often...
3. Then go to your.. My Documents... Or wherever you keep you personal documents. Right click on each folder, select properties and see what size they are. When you add them up you might find that KBs turn into MBs and they turn into GBs real fast. So you may need to delete what you dont want and burn what you want to CDs. Music, Videos, High quality photos take up tons of space.
4. Some software can take up to 1/2 Gig or more of space. Go through your old software and remove any you are not using. Including any software products that may have come with your computer that you are not using. Check through your ..Add or remove programs in the control panel. I hope this helps some.
Good Luck

A slowing computer could contributes by many things: not enough RAM (memory), too many auto startup programs, too many spywares in your computer, too many trash (cache, temp, cookies, uninstall info, etc...), undefrag HD, etc... I'll tell you what they are, and give you some tips on them, one by one:

1) The most easiest way and fast way to make a computer funs faster is adding RAM. Nothing can beat that. So, go to http://crucial.com, let it scans your computer, and it'll tell you how much ram you already have, how much max you can have, and all of that. It also tells you what type of RAM do you use, you would need to buy the "right" RAM for your computer. Look for "DDR 2 PC 5200" or anything similar, this is what you would need to go buy new RAM. If you're running XP Pro, 2gig would be enough, don't go more than that, unless you're playing games or editing videos, then the more the better.

2) To tackle too many auto startup programs that you don't need, click Start>>Run, type msconfig, click OK, Start tab, uncheck anything that you don't need to run when u're turn on your computer, but leave antivirus, antispyware, firewall checked, then OK to exit, it will ask you if you want to restart your computer, you can restart to effect immediately or do it later.

3) To get rid of those spywares lurking in your computer, you would need proper programs to do it, Antivirus won't do, because they are designed for virus, not spyware, so go to http://filehippo.com, on the middle column, the first box, download: Ad-Aware, Spybot Search and Destroy, Windows Defenders. You can have more than one anti-spywares installed, but not Antivirus and Firewall, they will conflicting each other.

4) To get rid of those trashes, Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> Disk Cleanup, check all the boxes you see in it. Do this once a week. Or you can download CCleaner, also at http://filehippo.com. CCleaner will auto delete these for you everytime you turn on your computer if you preferred.

5) Over times, whenever you install a program or save a file, computer will try to fit that program/file into the first space it finds, if the space is smaller than the file, it would be splitted, and save into other space in diff location. Over time, files are been save, deleted, and move around, you'll ended up have too many empty spaces around in your HD (hard drive), so the computer would work harder to get that file back in one piece, so it slows down your computer, so you would need to defrag (to pieces them back together) your computer. The Defragment is located on the same area where you do the Disk Cleanup. Defrag your computer would take few hours to complete, depends how large your HD or how many files you have in your computer, so it's best to let it do overnight when you're sleep or while you're at work. And this should be the last step to do. Therefore, I listed this step as the last step. If you do the trash AFTER defrag, first, it would take longer time to do, cuz you don't want computer to defrag your trash, PLUS, if you defragged your compouter before clean out the trash, then you do the trash clean up, you will leave holes/spaces on your computer again (due to removing the trash out).

A clean computer is key to a faster computer. Run the 3 scans below.

Run a virus scan weekly.

Update and run your Anti-Virus program. Don't have one? You can run a free online scan from CA.
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virus...

Run Spybot and Adaware weekly.

Download, update and run Spybot---http://www.safer-networking.org/... . Don't forget to use the Immunize feature.

Download, update and run Adaware---http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaw...

Now to prevent spyware from being installed in the first place....

Download SpywareBlaster---http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html

SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed.

It's main features include:
- Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
- Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
- Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.

Now lets clean up your registry.

Run RegScrubXP weekly. Run Cleanup every time you log off.

Download RegScrubXP--http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?d...

Safely cleans junk out of the Windows 2000/XP system registry. All changes made to the registry are fully restorable to it's original condition. You can make an exclusion list of registry entries that RegScrubXP will not display as problems. You can sift through a list of file extensions, company names, run upon startup programs, Internet Explorer history, and uninstall programs to delete what you think is junk.

Download CleanUp---http://www.stevengould.org/software/clea...

Free disk space, make your computer run better/faster and protect your privacy - all in one easy solution. All for free!

Now lets clean up your disk.

Run a Disk Cleanup 2 times a month. Run Disk Defrag. monthly.

Do a Disk Cleanup and Disk Defrag. You can find both of them by following the path below.
Start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Cleanup. Let it do its thing. You can check every box that has something to delete.
Now follow the same path and do a Disk Defrag. Again just let it do its thing.

Now lets tweak your connection.

If your speed is good I would not mess with it by trying to tweak it. If you do tweak once it is done you should not have to do it every again.

There are many programs out there to do this. I will give you 2 of them.
The first one is TCP Optimizer.

Description: The TCP Optimizer is a free, easy Windows program that provides an intuitive interface for tuning and optimizing your Internet connection. There is no installation required, just download and run.

http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php....

You can get support for the best way to set it up right from their forum http://forums.speedguide.net/

The second one is Cablenut.

Windows XP tested and approved

CableNut is a tool for optimizing your Internet Connection. We have provided a way to tweak any option you may want to in the adjuster. You can load "CableNut Custom Setting" files that are included with the program to tweak your Internet connection.

http://www.cablenut.com/

Again support is available right from their forum.http://www.broadbandnuts.com/index.php?p...

All programs are FREE!

After applying the suggestions above you will have a clean and faster computer. Enjoy.

Add ram, get a faster CPU or add Cache, that is the three ways to speed up your computer.

You can clean it out by going to the control panel and deleting cookies, passwords, and history and especially temp. files. I had to do that to my computer much much faster.
