A smaller group is the best way to get the tightest sound. Some of the best rock bands ever have been three or four people. The essential elements are a good drummer, a good bass player and a good vocalist. For instrumental parts, most bands have a guitar or a keyboard, but some bands are using electric violins instead of either of those. The other main element is FOCUS. Whatever you do as a band, however many players you want to have, whichever instruments you decide to use, everyone in the band needs to focus on playing the song in the style. Agreement on the songs and the style of playing is key.
You could fit as many as seven or eight people into a band and still have a rock sound as long as everyone has a place and knows their place. You can include a rhythm guitar, two lead guitars (they'll trade off. They won't always play on the same songs) a keyboardist, a percussionist (sometimes the singer is also a percussionist--congas, tambourine, cowbell...)
Or have a "core group" of the essential players--drums, bass, guitar, vocals--and bring in other people for certain songs--like a horn section for one song or a group of backing vocalists.
The point is that if you let the group get too big, you'll have trouble getting a focused sound and you will have a problem with people being in the group, but not always having something to do. If you keep it small, everyone gets to play and it's easier to develop the unique sound of your own band.
After that, just ROCK!!!!

Hey there!
I'm 16 and I always daydream of being on stage in front of a wild crowd hooking horns and pumping fists and I bet you do too!
Anyway, you said appropriate Instruments, it depends on the kind of music you're going to play (Please AVOID Nu-Metal and Emo) I mean if you're going to be a Punk Rock band I think you'll just need a Drummer, a Guitarist and a Bassist and the Vocalist can be the Guitarist or the Bassist or maybe he can grab the Mic.
But let's say you're gonna play Hard Rock, then you may need 2 Guitarists 1 of 'em would be Rhythm and the other one will be Lead Guitarist or the two Guitarists can share the Rhythm and Lead parts (like Glen Tipton and K.K. Downing of Judas Priest), and you'll need a Bassist, a Drummer of course and did I say that you may need a Keyboardist? a Vocalist can do that job although I'd prefer that the Vocals would have the Rhythm Guitar ( I don't know why but in my future band the Vocalist will be the Rhythm Guitarist like KISS and Metallica).
If you meant by the appropriate instruments what Guitar would suit you then I don't think I can answer because it depends on your taste =P
As you can see I'd recommend a band of 3 to 4 members, although a 5 piece band is a pretty common thing but IMO that it's a little bit too much.
Last words:-
-Don't try to copy your fav artists/ bands, but you can get influenced by their style.
-NEVER create something that isn't satisfying you (e.g.: when you go BIG a label forces you to sing what isn't you).
-Creating good music isn't an easy thing, so you must work hard to reach the top.
I hope that helped!

JOB #1 Find a good lead singer.
The best bands have great vocals. Not many instrumental bands out there. Most musicians have trouble playing well and singing well at the same time.
Stick with people that have the same comittment level to rehearsals that you do.
4 is the magic number of players. Guitar, Bass, Drums, Vocalist.
(5 if you want Keyboards, or a second guitar player.)

There's no such thing as the perfect rock band, because everything comes down to taste. For example, some people would cite AC/DC as the greatest rock band ever. Other people would cite Aerosmith...
how do you distinguish between which is better? You can't.
The only thing you can do is play your own music, and just believe in what you are doing. Never try to go for commericality. Just play what you would like to hear...

i might choose a band that did not gown up or attempt and create a glance. in simple terms gown and act commonly. think of roughly it whilst i take advantage of to take heed to green Day I enjoyed their song. Than you notice the muscic video or see photos of them and that they do in simple terms not extra healthful what you imagined once you listened to the song. i assume i admire modesty yet that in simple terms feels like quaker BS. gadgets may be a guitar, base, drums, and my famous whilst interior the bands is a clasic piano. No techno, no pc redoing in simple terms the sounds of the insturments. Thats sturdy muscic
