I live in central Mass and every time I go to downtown Boston some rich white business people look at me with this look of disgust on their face. Is it all in my head? I have a feeling that Barry Bonds was right about Boston.

i moved from Boston, where I grew up, to Texas, where it's cheaper to live, years ago, and "freaked" because everyone was looking at me, and smiling, and saying "hi." it took awhile to get used to the fact that people in a lot of other states, especially white people (I'm black) will ask "how are you?" and smile while they say it,and they weren't insane, nor were they trying to sell me something. (I say "especially white people," because I had always heard that racism is rampant in the South.)

what's funny, is that i never considered Bostonians unfriendly. Even now, when i visit my family, i still don't think "unfriendly." I guess a more accurate description would be "businesslike," or "reserved."

As for these looks of disgust you mention, I can't help think that it may be more in your head than not (unless you're dressed strangely AND approaching people in a strange manner...I've noticed Bostonians tend to ignore the strangely dressed as well, unless approached).

Maybe you should give 'em another chance. Hang out in a coffee shop and watch to see if these same kinds of looks are given to other people as well. You may notice it is not as personal as you may think.

Boston has a long history of racism. It could be that or they have big heads since the Red Sox won in 2004. I am not saying it is racism but it is a possibility. In other words, they are every bad thing and more that is said about them. I will probably take my life into my own hands if I go to Boston to see the Yankees visit there. It sucks. How can people defend Boston when Yankees fans are insulted and death threats are what Yankee fans have to deal with when they visit there. They should just rename it ****** town. Their accents suck too.

I don't think you can generalize all of South Boston into that category. My be your not used too their accent and you just perceive that's what's going on? Or maybe your the problem ever think of that? I think they are just like all other people some good some bad.

lets get this straight.

many people in boston ARE snobs. they are rich, liberal, well educated, well dressed and gorgeous...and most of them are NOT originally from the area.

their snobbishness comes from being rich, educated and gorgeous..it has NOTHING to do with the color of their skin.

Boston (and its surrounding areas) are very localized communities. Including the area you are speaking of...near Worcester, I am guessing. They are some quirky people up there..they just are....so...yes..its all in your head....they hate everyone equally.

I've never been to Boston, but I've been to a few money-obsessed cities. You just have to learn to ignore the ignorant. When you walk down the streets of any city or any establishment, remember, you belong in any situation you choose to be in. Your money is green! When they make you feel inadequate, they win.

Its all in your head -- we are not snobs or any different than you. Be grateful they look at you at all... you try to make as little eye contact as possible in Boston. Lots of crazies around!! LOL

I have a friend who is a Yankee fan and he is disabled, he has these big braces on his legs and he can't walk right. So he is in Boston to see a game and he has a Yankees shirt on and he is hobbling down the street and there were Sox fans yelling death threats at him. Pretty amazing huh.

I guess my question, is how were you dressed? Maybe you had some TP stuck to your shoe...

But, you know what I've found with many cities is that the locals don't like tourists... maybe that's what they thought you were.

Also, you might ask yourself, if these business people were in your neighbourhood, how would people react to them? Would your neighbours seem like snobs?

Boston is not a friendly city, so you just gotta suck it up or do something to change it, and seeing as how you live in central Mass well maybe you just gotta suck it up.
