The safest position is in the middle, however it's more important to make sure it is installed properly. Find the best position for your car and have it inspected by a certified car seat inspector. If you haven't already purchased a seat, there are websites that will help you find a seat that works well in your type of car. Always try to keep your child rear facing as long as possible. They are much more protected when rear facing.

Some car manufacturers actually say to place the car seat on the left or right side, like our subaru outback. Generally, the safest place for the baby is in the middle of the back seat. Our carrier says to use a towel if necessary to ensure a tight fit. We were able to secure the car seat in the middle. I then went to a car seat inspection to make sure it was in good. Read both your car manual and the car seat instructions. If the middle doesn't work, which was the case for the infant carrier (we now have new car seat) in our car, the left side is the next best place. Studies show a driver's natural instinct is to avoid getting hurt so the placement behind the driver is actually the next safest place in the car. Some cars design the back seats to have the car seats on the sides and it is actually not recommended to use the middle. Some middle seats of cars do not have a locking system and the belt will actually pull the car seat up. Read both manuals and then check online to see where the closest car seat inspection is. I know our car seat is in right and feel more comfortable with her in the middle, but if we weren't able to get a tight fit, the car seat would have had to go on the right side. Otherwise my husband would not be able to drive.

An infant seat can be place on either side or in the middle I would read the instructions for your particular car seat and see if it lists any recommendations.

I work at an attorney's office and our private investigator is a retired police officer and advised me that the middle is the safest place for an infant seat in the car. I tried to put my sons seat in the middle, but it moved around too much, so I put it on the passenger side--I thought that would be a little safer than the driver's side since most traffic is on the driver's side and in the event of a head on it'd be on my side and also I can reach him when he drops toys or his sippy cup, etc.
Good luck.

You can have the seat in any seat. I would put my son (when he was the only child) in the middle when someone was in the front seat cause in a accident the seats push back HARD. After I had my second my son was big enough to sit in a 5 point seat and the front seats were not a problem as much as when he was a infant.

the car seat can go on either side. if it is possible it is safer for it to go in the middle this way in the case of an accident it is not behind the front seats that can fall back and hit the car seat and away from the side windows which are more likely to break then rear window and aways from air bags if you car has side air bags.

I would go to your local fire department and have them install your seat for you. It is done free of charge and any questions you may have they can answer anything about were your baby should sit in the car.
I have a 7 year old and an 8 month old so I can't put him in the middle just because of his sister being in the back seat as well.

Depending on how big your backseat is. Does the middle seat belt lock? If not, I suggest one of the sides.. where you can see the seat the best. I have mine it the middle for my 5 yr old as of now.. but when the baby gets here.. they will be on both sides.. so where ever you feel comfortable and know that the seat belt is locked in place. Good luck.

I have two kids. There for there was a point that I was driving a Honda civic. It is impossible to put the car seat in the middle with another car seat on its side. so I put it by the door. It is safest in the middle if possible but it is one of those things you can only do with what you have.

Well, I have twins so atleast one of the car seats have to be placed on the side. People think it's safer for the child to be in the middle because they won't get a direct hit from a side impact. But, it can be placed on the side.
