You need to think about what type of college you want in terms of size, competitiveness, proximity to home, cost, school spirit and sports, and degrees offered vs. what you want to study. Do some research on what it takes to get in.

When you and your family go on vacations, start to drive through campuses to see what they look like. You will begin to develop likes and dislikes.

In the meantime, the most important thing you can do is make great grades, study for your SAT and ACT, and be active in school and outside school volunteering. Your senior grades really don't count very much toward getting into college, so you've basically got three years.

Most people change their minds many times in making the college decision. Don't feel that you have to settle on anything right now except what it takes to get into any college you might choose.

It is absolutely wonderful that you are looking at colleges in 9th grade; completely appropriate. The world is your oyster. College and career searching can never be done too early especially since it is so difficult for many people to make a decision about what they want to do in life. Some thirty-year-old's don't even know what they want to do when they grow up. If your anything like me, I had an idea about what I wanted to do for a long time, thus I started looking at colleges early and graduated at an earlier age than most nurses. I love my job! Now I have opportunities at 26 with a masters degree in Nursing that most 40 year-old's don't have. Good Luck! I wish the best for you! Now go out there and make something great of yourself. Your family must be so proud of you!

Yes, it is fine. It gives you the chance to explore many schools. Even though you will probably change mind about your college major a couple times before high school graduation, it can give you some insight into what is available out there. An idea maybe is ask your parents maybe to take you on a college tour or two while on a trip because there might be a college or two near by. It is also a great time to start looking at college scholarships even though some might be a bit too early to apply for.

Yes, it's fine to look for one, BUT keep an open mind. You're in 9th grade and I all but guarantee you that by the time you graduate, you'll want to do something completely different. I'm an example of that. In 9th grade, I wanted a small, liberal arts college, and I was set on majoring in English. Now, I'm a sophomore at UPenn, a huge school in the city and am majoring in political science.

Absolutely!

I started looking for a college in tenth grade, and it wasn't soon enough! There are so many schools out there, so many different directions you could take, a lot of different strategies to consider. Several of my high school teachers were extremely helpful, telling me about the colleges they went to, what kinds of experiences to expect at different kinds of institutions, and ideas on figuring out how to qualify.

My 'long search' paid off, though; my four years (I graduated on time) at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA were some of the best in my life!

ABSOLUTELY. Your looking to your future and what better way then to start early and have 4 years to make an informed decision on where you want your higher education to be. If you start looking that early, you'll be one of the only ones in your senior class that pretty much knows exactly what they want to do after high school. More young people should take an active role in thinking ahead about their future.

It's best to plan for your future while you are in high school, even if you plan on going to go to college someday. If you want to go to college, you should try to think about what kind of class(es) you would like to take in college since there are a lot of classes available at different colleges, so keep your mind open.

Sure, it's great to start thinking ahead about what you want to do. Not to mention the courses you take in high school will limit or expand the number of choices you have later. I would recommend sitting down with your school consellor and looking over your options and the different paths you can take.

If you're interested, then why not? You'll have a good head start on finding out what it takes to gain admittance to the various colleges and can set your goals accordingly.
