When taped with normal force should bounce at least to the height above the top of the net.

It should be very hard, full of compressed gas.

It usually comes in the pressurised container(3 per container), once open it starts loosing the hardness slowly but surely.

Other way is to measure the diameter of the ball, and just look for cracks at the seem.

PS:
The material that the ball is made of gets(rubber) soft in hot climate, so after use put it in a zip lock bag or the original container and store in the refrigerator see if you can extend the life of the ball.

It's difficult to tell by bouncing unless you've been playing tennis for a while. Squeeze the ball-the firmer it is the better. If you can squeeze your fingers in more than a centimeter, the ball is getting old.

Bounce it on a cement, clay or grass court. If it bounces higher than waist high it is still a "live" ball.

Jim is right, although to clarify, it should bounce to waist height if held at shoulder height and dropped. You should not have to supply any downward momentum to get a waist-high rebound.

But still, vote for Jim, he was first.

well, in my experience, furry balls don't last (slazenger and some others), no more than one month. lighter, less furry balls (wilsons, dunlops), these balls often lose their colour quickly, but still play well for up to three months. some balls fall in between, (penn, dunlop grand prix).
