Same reason golf balls have numbers on them.

The numbers are assigned to courts. Common Tennis Facilities have 4 courts, hence, tennis ball numbers go up to 4

Man, you have a lot of questions about tennis balls.

Balls are numbered for the same reason they are marked with different colored inks, for purposes of identification. If your balls get mixed up with someone else's on the courts, the color and numerical demarkation will help you separate your balls from someone else's.
