Yes you can! It may take a little while longer to get the old strings off if they have been fitted poorly, but it's just like trying to knots out shoe laces really. Ignore the comment that starts with: "If it's a Fender..." This makes zero difference.
Depending on what type of bridge you have, will depend on what method to use, but there are several websites, showing step by step instructions, including: http://www.gibson.com/Service/Owners%20Info%20Guide/Stringing%20your%20Guitar/
When I have to restring my guitars on stage or without the correct tools, you can actually keep bending the string in the same spot, all the way one way and then all the way back, after 4 or 5 goes the string will break off in your hand.
The Correct tools can be found quite cheaply. Look for the Roadie Rench when you're ready, It does pretty much everything and ou should be able to pick it up for about £10.

If it's a Fender, you will need wire cutters to cut the brass barrel shape off the end to feed the string into the clamp.
Otherwise on most guitars you just anchor the string barrel at the bridge end, feed the string along the neck and through the hole in the capston and turn the string capston by using the "handle"
The surplus string can just be coiled up.
I never had a string winder for years, ---bit of a gimmick --- --but does save time.
A point worth noting if considering splashing out on a string winder is that some of them are equipped with a wire cutter as well.
2 Tools in one eh!!

Sure you can. String winders aren't really necessary at all, they just make bringing strings up to tension faster. The tuners should be turn-able by hand. As for cutting the strings, you could always leave them hanging from the headstock until you get hold of some cutters. I usually coil the rest of each string into loops to keep them out of the way if I can't find a pair of pliers or cutters.

The tone of the the string is much better if you do NOT cut the string at all. Just keep winding it around the post until tight. Use one finger to keep it snug against the peg. Work it from top to bottom as you tighten the knob.

As far as the wire cutter goes you can use a pair of toe nail clippers...as far as the winder goes use a pair of pliers. Anymore questions let me know....

I do it all the time. Just loosen the strings and take them off the tuning peg then pull it through the bridge and presto you've taken the string off.
