If you can get your computer to stay on long enough you should burn the recovery cd's for your computer. HP (at least the newer ones) come with a utility built in Start > Programs > System Recovery that allows you to "create" a system recovery disk. If this does not wok for you then contact HP support and they can send you a new recovery cd for the cost of shipping. (if you're still under warranty) Note the fact that this was a gift does not matter, at all.

Perhaps your processor fan is not operating. Does the computer ever lockup or freeze? Could be software caused issues. Try downloading Ad-Aware SE from http://www.lavasoft.com. It's a free version. Run a good virus scan. That wouldhelp eliminate a software created problem. Are you sure it isn'g going into Hibernation? You can disable Standby, Hibernate in Control Panel | Power Options. Try turning off Hibernate and or Standby to see if that helps.

Well first off its an HP. They suck. Tell us does it get really hot? If so it could be a cooling issue. If not try reinsalling windows on it and see if it works then.

It sounds like its overheating. Make sure that the little slots for the fan are not blocked and dont set it on a pillow that could block any vent holes on the bottom.
